Birthrate Plus® Down Under! New South Wales, Australia. Following an initial trial in 2004/05 New South Wales is again working with Birthrate Plus® on a huge project across 21 maternity units State wide (representing 67% of births in NSW!) to assess the suitability of the Birthrate Plus® methodology for application in the NSW health environment.
In 2004 the NSW Nurses Association (NSWNA) and NSW Department of Health (DOH), negotiated an award entitlement for reasonable workloads for nurses and midwives working in the public health system. The Reasonable Workloads Clause in the Public Hospital Nurses’ (State) Award enforces the right to a reasonable workload. It was recognised however that The General Workload Calculation Tool developed to measure nursing workloads in surgical and medical wards, was not appropriate for measuring workloads in midwifery services. The Nursing and Midwifery Office at NSW Health, together with the NSW Nurses Association and the authors of Birthrate Plus®, Marie Washbrook and Jean Ball, are currently working to assess the suitability of the Birthrate Plus® model for application in the NSW health environment. The project will be completed in late 2009 when it will be presented to the DOH, NSWNA and the State-wide Steering Committee for Reasonable Workloads to determine whether Birthrate Plus® should be adopted in NSW for maternity services. Whilst it is recognised that NSW does differ from the UK it is vital that the Birthrate Plus® methodology remains robust and valid when applied in different maternity services. Joining the team in the Nursing and Midwifery Office at NSW Health in Sydney is Julie Mate, Project Manager Birthrate Plus®. Julie has been a midwife for 14 years working across all areas of midwifery and has a broad understanding of maternity services in NSW. Julie is working closely with Marie Washbrook via phone, email and in person as NSW Health has once again contracted Marie Washbrook to oversee the project. Julie can be contacted at
