Marie trained as a nurse and midwife in Oxford from 1969 to 1974, moving to Nottingham with her husband’s job. Continuing to work full time whilst raising 2 daughters, Marie held several clinical midwifery posts before moving into managerial, audit and informatics posts at local and national levels.
Marie is co-author of Birthrate Plus with 25 years of assisting maternity units in the UK, Eire, Hong Kong and New South Wales in Australia to undertake workforce planning using the Birthrate Plus methodology. This includes working on the development and refinement of the method with colleagues, in response to changes in maternity health policy and clinical practices.
Since taking early retirement from the NHS in 2005, Marie has continued to support maternity services at the request of Trusts, Health Authorities and Health Boards. This involves looking at issues such as midwifery workforce planning, reconfiguration of services and use of a ‘real time staffing’ (acuity) tool for intrapartum services. She is currently working with the BR+ Team on developing an ante/postnatal ward acuity tool.
